My normal coaching program consists of an initial high-level training overview, followed by weekly schedules and periodic articles relating to running, nutrition, form drills, lifting, etc. I am available for answering questions via email or by phone as much as needed.

I have recently added a new service which includes the high-level training overview, the various training-related articles, and an initial phone consultation. This is ideal for a person who is self-motivated but would like an experienced outsider to look at their current training and help guide them towards a more structured program leading up to their next goal race. This service also includes follow-up eamils/phone calls but not weekly schedules.

Training Philosophy

I emphasize the idea of establishing date paces (current ability) and then gradually increasing the intensity of each type of training run till the corresponding goal paces (for achieving the desired race time) are attained. I’m also a big proponent of weight lifting and functionally specific strengthening for runners and can help get you started on a program if you are interested.

As far as overall training cycles, I use an approach called “non-linear periodization” which differs from the traditional “western periodization” ideas that are more geared towards a particular short season of goal races. It is one thing if you are a 1500 meter runner training for the Olympic finals and you are devoting 2 years to that one goal, but for most people it is more effective to strive for a relatively high level of fitness all the time. What this means from a practical standpoint is you’ll be doing all the key components of training (long slow distance, lactate threshold tempo runs, hill/strength explosive training, and max V02 workouts) at all times during the training. Then, for a period of 6 – 8 weeks prior to any particular goal race, I would adjust things to specifically address the demands of that race.
